About Futures Thinking Workshop

Prof. Sohail Inayatullah

Prof Sohail Inayatullah has a PhD in Political Science. He has a MA in political science with a focus on Alternative Futures.

He has nearly forty years’ experience running foresight workshops. The consultant presents keynote addresses and strategic foresight workshops with clients from around the world on a weekly basis. He was ranked as the all-time best futurist by the Shaping Tomorrow network in 2010.

Dr. Ivana Milojevic

Dr. Ivanka is a researcher, writer and educator with a trans-disciplinary professional background in sociology, education, gender, peace and futures studies. She obtained her BA degree in sociology at the University of Belgrade in 1992 and a PhD in education at the University of Queensland in 2003. Milojević is the author of over eighty journal articles and book chapters, as well as the author, co-author and/or co-editor of a number of academic books.

Method 1: The Futures triangle

  • Images of the future
  • Quantitative pushes of the present
  • Weights of history

Workshop activity: Participants develop a futures triangle

Method 2: Emerging Issues analysis – recap from day 1

  • What are the emerging weak signals – game changing disruptions for your organization?
  • What are the trends?

Method 3: the Futures Wheel – recap from day 1

  • What are the implications of these issues?

Method 4: Macrohistory and the Sarkar game – understanding leadership and archetypes in organizations.

  • Play the interactive Sarkar game. How can you play a role in creating balanced futures?

Method 5: Conflict transformation futures

  • Participants work on conflicts between visions and within their organization. They use the future to productively resolve the conflict.

Method 6: Causal Layered Analysis: deepening policy shifts – stakeholders and futures.

  • Develop policy solutions and strategies based on four levels: litany, systemic, worldview and myth/metaphor.

Workshop activity: unpack one problem, trend or emerging issue from the view of different stakeholders. What are the ways that different stakeholders can authentically work together?

What I love about futures and the way Sohail teaches it is that it opens participants’ minds that visions have to be more than possible futures: they have to be preferred futures. I met Sohail unexpectedly in 2005 at conference on University of Tomorrow, in Luxembourg. I learnt about futures and scenario planning from his lucid presentation then. Within the next month, Sohail was in Penang to lead a team of 30 academics from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to plan ahead for the 2025. By 2008, USM won the prestigious bid to be Malaysia’s only APEX status university based on the outcome of the scenario plan, in particular as “The Sustainability-led University.” The rest is history. I find Sohail’s approach to the futures is very instructive and practical for those who are looking for a model of transformation in an uncertain future. It is also fun-filled as much as it is thought-provoking!

The workshop is an executive foresight workshop that aims to enhance the effectiveness of long-range planning for managers through the use of appropriate futures methodological tools.

The course is designed for government and organizations officials and decision makers, futures thinking and foresight practitioners, and strategic planning and change management professionals.

Yes, each participant will receive a certificate of completion.

The objectives of the workshop include enhancing the effectiveness of long-range planning, clarifying emerging issues and trends, clarifying weights impeding the desired futures, empowering leaders and managers to create the futures they desire, developing forecasts and scenarios, and enhancing the effectiveness to deliver the organizational vision.

The tools and methods covered in the course include the Futures triangle, Emerging Issues analysis, the Futures Wheel, Macrohistory and the Sarkar game, Conflict transformation futures, Causal Layered Analysis, and Revisit scenarios.

The outcomes of the course include understanding and familiarity with methods used to develop alternative futures, capacity to use the future as a tool for strategy and transformation within the organization, and greater understanding of self, leadership, and futures – personal futures.
